From its earliest inception, rock music proved to be one of the most socially transformative and culturally adaptive forces in popular culture of the 20th century, transcending national borders and becoming a worldwide phenomenon. This course explores rock-n-roll culture within a Russian context, considering its role in both nonconformist and nationalist movements in the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation. Course materials include audio recordings, feature and documentary films as well as a selection of articles from both scholarly sources and popular press of the time.
